FROM FOREST TO TIMBER
At Muupuu, timber is never rushed. Every batch in our warehouse has travelled a long journey from the forest to a finished board and has spent years drying in timber stacks.
It All Begins in the Forest
Over the years, we have carefully selected trees that offered something special: an attractive grain pattern, exceptional quality, an interesting species, or another unique characteristic.
Our selection includes birch, aspen, alder, rowan, goat willow and other Finnish specialty timbers.
Felling and Sawing
The trees are felled during winter and sawn in spring.
Most of the timber is sawn into thick live edge boards, preserving the tree's natural shape, full width and individual character.
Once a board has been cut too small, it cannot be made large again. Starting with a thick board gives the maker far more possibilities.
Natural Air Drying
After sawing, the timber is stacked to dry naturally. Air circulates freely between the boards, allowing the wood to dry slowly at its own pace.
Much of Muupuu's timber has been drying and stabilising for more than ten years.
Time benefits timber. Over the years, the moisture content equalises and the internal stresses created during sawing gradually diminish. The wood cells naturally die, making the timber far less likely to warp or crack. Well-seasoned timber is more stable and more enjoyable to work with.
Storage
Once drying is complete, the timber is moved into storage, protected from rain and the weather.
Over time, the surface of the wood may develop a grey patina, but this affects only the outer layer. Beneath the surface is the same quality timber that was sawn years ago.
Every board is unique. That is why we encourage you to visit our warehouse, examine the timber in person and choose the pieces that best suit your project.
